This Skill ensures that every academic citation can be traced back to the original document page, distinguishingdirect quotationsandindirect quotations, marking citations that cannot be verified as **"to be verified"**, and refusing to cite unverified secondary sources. It is the core tool for building a credible research record.
Applicable Scenarios
- Checking citation accuracy during paper writing
- Post-hoc verification after completing a literature review
- Self-checking citation quality before peer review
- Building an auditable literature library
- Detecting "ghost citations" (cited but the original text does not exist)
Core Principles
Citations are not decoration, they are evidence. Every citation in an academic paper should be:
- Locatable—able to point out the specific page
- Distinguishable—direct quotation (verbatim) vs indirect quotation (paraphrase)
- Challengeable—when the original text cannot be found, it must be honestly marked
Three Types of Citation Errors (Must Be Avoided):
| Error Type | Description | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Ghost citation | Cited but the original text does not exist at all | Academic reputation disaster |
| Citation error | Citing a secondary source rather than the original source | Information decay and distortion |
| Taking quotes out of context | Citing only partial statements that support one's own viewpoint | Academic misconduct |
Workflow
Step 1 · Collect the citation list
Extract all citations from the paper draft or notes, and organize them into a structured list:
|---|------|------|------|-------------|
| 1 | Acemoglu et al. (2001) | | | |
(Wang, 2020, p.15) | | | |
Step 2 · Trace each item
Perform the following verification steps for each citation:
① Find the original document
- Direct quotation → find the original PDF text
- Indirect quotation → find the original research (not a secondary paraphrase)
② Locate the specific page number
- Open the original text and locate the specific position of the citation
- Record: page number, paragraph, figure/table number
③ Distinguish citation types
| Type | Judgment Criterion | Marking Method |
|---|---|---|
| Direct quotation | Quote the original text verbatim; if over 40 characters, quotation marks must be added | 「直接引用,p.XX」 |
| Indirect quotation | Paraphrase the core viewpoint of the original text in one's own words | 「间接引用,p.XX」 |
| To be verified | Unable to find the original text or unable to confirm accuracy | 「
Step 3 · Handling Common Issues
When the original text cannot be found:
- First confirm whether it has been cited through a secondary source, and try to trace it back to the original source
- If it is confirmed that it cannot be found, mark
Do not fabricate page numbers or invent citations
When the quoted original text does not match the paper's statement:
- Faithfully reflect the meaning of the original text; do not tamper with it
- If there are conditions or qualifiers in the original text, they must not be omitted
Data Citation Verification:
- Data sources must be specified precisely to: database name, variable name, sample time range
- Annotation example:
「世界银行WDI数据库,GDP per capita (NY.GDP.PCAP.CD),1990-2020」
Step 4 · Output the verification report
Final structured report output:

Important statement
- Citation verification is not punishment, it is constructive—the purpose is to improve research credibility
- "To be verified" does not equal fabrication—honestly marking items to be verified is a manifestation of academic integrity
- Verifying the citations in one's own paperrequires more courage than verifying someone else's paper; this Skill supports self-check scenarios
