About this skill

Hero Section Design

Before You Start: Load Design Context

  1. Read .agents/design-context.md (written by the design-context skill). If it is missing, look for tokens in tailwind.config.* or :root CSS variables. If nothing exists, use the defaults (Primary #2563EB, Secondary #7C3AED, Accent #F59E0B, Tailwind gray neutrals, Inter for headings and body, Minimal style) and tell the user defaults were used — suggest running design-context.
  2. Map tokens to CSS variables once, then use only the variables: --color-primary, --color-primary-light, --color-primary-dark, --color-secondary, --color-accent, --color-neutral-50…--color-neutral-900, --color-success/-warning/-error, --font-heading, --font-body, --font-mono, --radius, and the 4px-base spacing scale.
  3. Tailwind: expose the same variables (v3 theme.extend, v4 @theme) as primary, primary-light, primary-dark, secondary, accent, neutral-*, font-heading, font-body. The indigo-* / gray-* classes in the examples below are placeholders for these tokens.
  4. Figma: if the user gives a Figma URL, pull it with the Figma MCP (get_design_context, get_screenshot) and match it; it overrides the context file for that design.
  5. Ask or infer the product and the primary CTA. Let the style archetype pick the pattern: Minimal/Corporate → centered or split; Bold/Playful → gradient backgrounds; Luxurious → minimal typography on a dark surface.

1. Headline Hierarchy

Every hero follows this structure, top to bottom:

[Optional: Badge / Announcement]
[Headline: Value Proposition]
[Subheadline: Supporting Detail]
[CTA Button(s)]
[Trust Signals]
[Visual: Image, Mockup, or Illustration]

Headline Rules

  • One sentence. Maximum 10 words.
  • State the benefit, not the feature. "Ship faster" > "CI/CD pipeline tool".
  • Use text-4xl sm:text-5xl lg:text-6xl scale.
  • font-extrabold tracking-tight leading-[1.1] for impact.

Subheadline Rules

  • 1–2 sentences expanding on the headline.
  • text-lg sm:text-xl text-gray-600 max-w-2xl.
  • Answer: "What is this, and why should I care?"

2. Hero Pattern: Centered with Gradient Background

The most versatile hero. Works for SaaS, tools, and platforms.

4. Hero Pattern: Video / Animated Background

<!-- svh, not h-screen/100vh: 100vh is taller than the visible area on mobile browsers -->
<section class="relative h-svh min-h-[600px] max-h-[900px] flex items-center overflow-hidden">

    class="absolute inset-0 w-full h-full object-cover"
  >
    <source src="/hero-bg.webm" type="video/webm" />
    <source src="/hero-bg.mp4" type="video/mp4" />
  </video>

  <!-- Dark overlay -->
  <div class="absolute inset-0 bg-gray-950/60"></div>

  </div>

  <!-- Pause control: required for motion that lasts > 5s (WCAG 2.2.2) -->
  <button type="button" class="absolute bottom-6 right-6 z-10 rounded-full bg-black/50
    px-4 py-2 text-sm text-white focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-2
    focus-visible:outline-white">Pause background video</button>
  <!-- JS: toggle video.pause()/play() and swap the label to "Play background video" -->

  <!-- Scroll indicator -->

        d="M19 14l-7 7m0 0l-7-7m7 7V3"/>
    </svg>
  </div>
</section>

Video Hero Rules

  • Keep video 5–15 seconds, looping.
  • File size under 5MB. Use WebM + MP4 for compatibility.
  • Always provide a poster image — it is the LCP candidate, so preload it with fetchpriority="high".
  • Use playsinline for iOS.
  • Provide a pause button, and under prefers-reduced-motion: reduce don't autoplay — show the poster only (video.pause() when matchMedia('(prefers-reduced-motion: reduce)').matches).
  • Text must have sufficient contrast against the overlay.

5. Hero Pattern: Minimal Typography

For premium brands, agencies, and portfolios.

<section class="min-h-svh flex items-center bg-gray-950">
  <div class="mx-auto max-w-7xl px-4 sm:px-6 lg:px-8 py-32">
    <h1 class="text-5xl sm:text-7xl lg:text-9xl font-extrabold text-white
      tracking-tighter leading-[0.9]">
      We design<br />
      <span class="text-gray-500">digital</span><br />
      experiences
    </h1>
    <div class="mt-12 flex items-center gap-6">
      <a href="#" class="text-white border border-white/20 px-6 py-3 rounded-full
        hover:bg-white hover:text-gray-950 transition-all font-medium">

      </a>
      <a href="#" class="text-gray-400 hover:text-white transition-colors font-medium">
        Contact us
      </a>
    </div>
  </div>
</section>

6. Background Techniques

Mesh Gradient

.mesh-gradient {
  background-color: oklch(97% 0.01 265);
  background-image:
    radial-gradient(at 20% 20%, oklch(90% 0.12 280 / 0.4) 0px, transparent 50%),
    radial-gradient(at 80% 10%, oklch(90% 0.10 320 / 0.3) 0px, transparent 50%),
    radial-gradient(at 50% 80%, oklch(90% 0.12 200 / 0.3) 0px, transparent 50%);
}

Animated Gradient

.animated-gradient {
  /* Build the stops from brand tokens, not arbitrary colors */
  background: linear-gradient(-45deg, var(--color-primary), var(--color-secondary), var(--color-accent), var(--color-primary-light));
  background-size: 400% 400%;
}
@media (prefers-reduced-motion: no-preference) {
  .animated-gradient { animation: gradient-shift 15s ease infinite; }
}
@keyframes gradient-shift {
  0% { background-position: 0% 50%; }
  50% { background-position: 100% 50%; }
  100% { background-position: 0% 50%; }
}

Dot Grid Pattern

.dot-grid {
  background-image: radial-gradient(circle, #d1d5db 1px, transparent 1px);
  background-size: 24px 24px;
}

Noise Texture

.noise {
  position: relative;
}
.noise::after {
  content: '';
  position: absolute;
  inset: 0;
  background-image: url("data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg viewBox='0 0 256 256' xmlns='http://www.w3.org/2000/svg'%3E%3Cfilter id='noise'%3E%3CfeTurbulence type='fractalNoise' baseFrequency='0.65' numOctaves='3' stitchTiles='stitch'/%3E%3C/filter%3E%3Crect width='100%25' height='100%25' filter='url(%23noise)' opacity='0.04'/%3E%3C/svg%3E");
  pointer-events: none;
}

7. Responsive Hero Strategy

Breakpoint Adjustments

Mobile (< 640px):
  - h1: text-3xl to text-4xl
  - Stack CTAs vertically (flex-col)
  - Hide decorative elements
  - Full-width buttons
  - Product image below text

Tablet (640–1024px):
  - h1: text-4xl to text-5xl
  - Horizontal CTAs (flex-row)
  - Product image scales down

Desktop (1024px+):
  - h1: text-5xl to text-6xl
  - Split layout becomes side-by-side
  - Full decorative elements visible

Image Handling

<picture>
  <source media="(min-width: 1024px)" srcset="/hero-desktop.webp" />
  <source media="(min-width: 640px)" srcset="/hero-tablet.webp" />
  <img src="/hero-mobile.webp" alt="Product preview" width="640" height="480"
    class="w-full h-auto rounded-2xl" fetchpriority="high" />
</picture>

8. LCP Performance

The hero is almost always the Largest Contentful Paint element. Optimize it.

Rules

  1. Use fetchpriority="high" on the hero <img> and give it width/height (prevents CLS).
  2. Never lazy-load the hero image (loading="lazy" delays LCP).
  3. Preload only late-discovered images — CSS backgrounds, JS-rendered heroes, video posters, <picture> art direction. An <img> already in the HTML doesn't need it.
  4. Inline critical CSS for the hero section. Don't animate the headline in from opacity: 0 — it delays LCP.
  5. Use WebP/AVIF format with fallback.
  6. Size appropriately: Don't serve a 4000px image for a 1200px container; use srcset/sizes.
<head>
  <link rel="preload" href="/hero.webp" as="image" fetchpriority="high"
    imagesrcset="/hero-400.webp 400w, /hero-800.webp 800w, /hero-1200.webp 1200w"
    imagesizes="100vw" />
</head>

Verify: Render and Check

Don't hand over code you haven't looked at. After generating it:

  1. Screenshot it at mobile and desktop widths, e.g. npx playwright screenshot --full-page --viewport-size=390,844 file://$PWD/index.html mobile.png, then again with --viewport-size=1440,900 (or point at the dev server URL).
  2. Open both images and check: no horizontal scroll or clipped/overlapping text, hierarchy reads at a glance, brand tokens are applied, images load at the right aspect ratio.
  3. Tab through once: every interactive element gets a visible focus ring, in a logical order.
  4. Check the 390px screenshot shows headline + primary CTA above the fold, and that the LCP image is not lazy-loaded (Lighthouse "LCP element" audit if a server is running).
  5. Fix what you find and re-screenshot before reporting done.

Hero Section Checklist

  • Headline is under 10 words and states the benefit
  • Subheadline expands on the value in 1–2 sentences
  • Primary CTA is large, high-contrast, and action-oriented
  • Secondary CTA is visually subordinate
  • Trust signals appear near the CTA
  • Hero image has fetchpriority="high", width/height, and no loading="lazy"
  • Decorative SVGs are aria-hidden; text over images/video meets 4.5:1
  • Rendered and screenshotted at 390px and 1440px (see Verify)
  • Responsive: text scales, layout adapts, images swap
  • Background adds visual interest without competing with content
  • Animation respects prefers-reduced-motion; background video has a pause control
  • Above the fold loads in under 2.5s (LCP target)
