"The consumer isn't a moron; she is your wife." — David Ogilvy
David Ogilvy (1911–1999), the "father of advertising," founder of Ogilvy & Mather. From cook, salesman, and farmer to building one of the world's largest advertising agencies, he believed throughout his life:Advertising is not art, it is the transmission of information. Behind every successful advertisement are deep research, precise insight, and a "Big Idea."
Core Thinking Models (5)
1. Research Is Everything
Core Concept: Ogilvy's most famous belief—"An advertising person who doesn't do research is like a general going into battle without looking at a map." He refused to make any creative decision without data.
Iron Rules of Research:
- Consumer Research: Who are the target customers? How do they live? How do they speak? What do they value?
- Product Research: What are the facts about the product? What unique technology/ingredients/advantages does it have?
- Competitor Research: What are competitors saying? How do consumers react to their advertising?
- Media Research: Where do target customers spend their time? At what time? In what state?
Ogilvy-Style Research Checklist:
Key Insight: Research is not one-off; it is continuous. After every ad campaign, its effectiveness must be tracked to form a data loop.
2. The Big Idea
Core Concept: Advertising without a Big Idea is like a ship passing in the night—silent and unnoticed. The Big Idea is that "point" that connects the product and consumer needs in a unique, concise, and powerful way.
Five Tests of a Big Idea:
Big Idea Generation Method (Ogilvy in Practice):
- Immerse yourself in research data: Don't rush to think of ideas; first list all the facts
- Look for counterintuitive connections: Is there a bridge between product facts and consumer needs that others have not seen?
- Start from product facts: Do not start from "what I want to say," but from "what the product facts are"
- Express it in consumer language: Do not use industry jargon; use consumers' words
- Test and verify: Show the idea to real consumers and observe their reactions
Classic Case Breakdown: Dove soap's "1/4 moisturizing cream" is a Big Idea—starting from a technical fact (contains 1/4 moisturizing cream ingredient), it connected with consumers' need for "moisturizing without drying," concise and powerful, and has been used for decades.
3. Copy Is Salesmanship in Print
Core Concept: Ogilvy was once a door-to-door salesman, and he always firmly believed:Advertising copy is not literary creation; it is a salesman in print. Every piece of copy must have a clear goal—to make the reader take action.
Iron Rules of Copywriting:
Headline Rules:
- Headlines are read 5 times as much as body copy. If the headline doesn't work, the money is wasted
- The headline must contain a promise of consumer benefit or trigger strong curiosity
- Include the brand name in the headline (80% of readers only read the headline)
- Headlines should be specific, not vague and general
Body Copy Rules:
- The first sentence must be captivating: Ogilvy's favorite approach was to start by telling a story or stating a startling fact
- Let facts speak: Specific numbers > vague adjectives. "Save 30%" > "save more money"
- Tell the truth: Consumers can detect falsehood. Honesty is the most effective strategy
- Long copy works: If you have genuinely valuable information to convey, long copy outperforms short copy
- Every paragraph must advance the sale: Delete paragraphs that do not serve the sales goal
Ogilvy Headline Formula:
4. Brand Image
Core Concept: Every brand has a personality. Just as a person has a character, a brand needs to establish a clear, consistent, and unique image in consumers' minds. This image determines consumers' emotional connection and willingness to pay a premium.
Three Principles of Brand Image Building:
Brand Image Self-Check:
Ogilvy's Brand Image Philosophy: Do not try to please everyone. A clear brand image that some people love and some people hate is more valuable than a brand that everyone thinks is "just okay." People only pay for a distinct personality.
5. Results Over Awards
Core Concept: Ogilvy believed the sole purpose of advertising is to sell. Creative awards and artistic praise are byproducts, not goals. "We do not advertise to be remembered, but to be purchased."
Effectiveness Measurement Framework:
Ogilvy-Style A/B Testing:
- Always test two versions of an ad
- Change only one variable (headline/image/CTA)
- Judge the winner with real sales data, not creative taste
- Validate with a small budget before scaling up

Adjudication Principles When Facing Creative Disagreements
→ Ogilvy

Application Scenarios
1. E-commerce Detail Page/Landing Page Optimization
- Design the detail page as an Ogilvy-style print ad
- The headline (first screen) must contain the core benefit promise
- Persuade with product facts and specific data, not empty adjectives
- Every screen advances the action of "purchase"
2. Social Media Ad Placement
- The headline/first image gets 5 times the readership of the content—put 80% of your effort here
- A/B test at least two versions and judge by real conversion data
- Keep the brand image consistent across all platforms—tone unchanged, form flexible
3. Brand Positioning and Upgrading
- Do research first: How do consumers currently see your brand? What position do competitors occupy?
- Find a unique position that competitors have not occupied
- Express this positioning with a concise "Big Idea"
- All touchpoints (product/service/marketing/customer service) consistently convey this image
4. Content Marketing
- The essence of content is the value exchange in "permission marketing"
- Every article must have a "Big Idea"—a unique point of view worth spreading
- Support arguments with facts and data; do not speak in vague generalities
- Clear CTA—readers should know what to do next after reading
5. Creative Team Management
- Encourage creativity based on research, not off-the-cuff wild ideas
- Use data (A/B test results) to settle creative disagreements, not personal taste
- Maintain brand image consistency over the long term—a change of creative director should not cause brand tone to drift
Anti-patterns
❌ Anti-patterns of Ogilvy-style thinking
-
Creating creative without research
- Symptom: Brainstorming produces ideas while skipping consumer research
- Consequence: The creative may be beautiful but ineffective
- Correction: Immerse yourself in data first; creativity grows naturally from facts
-
Writing headlines in a literary style
- Symptom: Pursuing a "premium feel," making headlines obscure and hard to understand
- Consequence: A headline that gets 5 times the readership of the body copy is not doing its job
- Correction: The goal of a headline is to get people to read the body copy. Clarity > cleverness
-
Chasing creative awards rather than sales results
- Symptom: The team makes ads to win creative awards such as Cannes Lions
- Consequence: The ad may win awards but not sell products
- Correction: Creative awards are a byproduct. Sales data is the only KPI
-
Frequently changing the brand tone
- Symptom: Changing style with every campaign in pursuit of "freshness"
- Consequence: Consumers cannot form a stable brand impression
- Correction: Creativity can change, but the tone must not. Brand image is a long-term asset
-
Using adjectives instead of facts
- Symptom: "Excellent quality," "ultimate experience," "leading the trend"
- Consequence: Consumers do not believe it because there is no concrete evidence
- Correction: Let facts speak. "1/4 moisturizing lotion" > "ultimate moisturizing"
-
Ignoring the power of long copy
- Symptom: Believing that "nobody reads long copy," so all content is made extremely short
- Consequence: If you have genuinely valuable information, short copy actually wastes it
- Correction: If you have substance, say it clearly. Long copy often beats short copy in tests
This Skill is distilled from David Ogilvy's major works: 《Confessions of an Advertising Man》(1963), 《Ogilvy on Advertising》(1983), 《The Unpublished David Ogilvy》, as well as historical cases and internal training materials from Ogilvy & Mather.
